The History of Birthstones: A Colorful Journey Through Time
The history of birthstones is a fascinating tale that spans centuries, continents, and cultures. It’s a story of mystery, intrigue, and a little bit of salesmanship. So grab a cup of tea, sit back, and let’s dive into the captivating world of birthstones.
A Tale as Old as Time
The concept of birthstones can be traced back to the first-century historian Josephus, who believed there was a connection between the twelve stones in Aaron’s breastplate (representing the tribes of Israel, as described in the Book of Exodus), the twelve months of the year, and the twelve signs of the zodiac. However, translations and interpretations of the passage in Exodus have varied widely, with Josephus himself providing two different lists of the twelve stones.
Fast forward to the eighth and ninth centuries, religious treatises began associating a particular stone with an apostle, with the idea that “their name would be inscribed on the Foundation Stones, and his virtue.” The practice then evolved to keeping twelve stones and wearing one each month. The custom of wearing a single birthstone, however, is only a few centuries old, with its origins in eighteenth-century Poland or sixteenth-century Germany, depending on who you ask.
Birthstones Through the Ages
Modern lists of birthstones have strayed quite a bit from their historical origins, with tastes, customs, and confusing translations playing a significant role. In fact, one author referred to the 1912 Kansas list as “nothing but a piece of unfounded salesmanship.”
In the nineteenth century, Tiffany & Co. published a series of poems that matched each month of the Gregorian calendar with a birthstone. These poems, of unknown authorship, first appeared in a pamphlet in 1870 and became the traditional stones of English-speaking societies.
Standardizing the Stones
In an effort to standardize birthstones, the American National Association of Jewelers (now called Jewelers of America) met in Kansas in 1912 and officially adopted a list. The list was updated in 1952, adding new stones like Alexandrite and Tanzanite, and making a few swaps. Meanwhile, Britain’s National Association of Goldsmiths created its own standardized list of birthstones in 1937.
A World of Birthstone Traditions
Eastern culture also recognizes a range of gemstones associated with birth, but instead of linking a gem to a birth month, gemstones are associated with celestial bodies. Astrology is used to determine the gemstones most closely associated with and beneficial to a particular individual.
For example, in Hinduism, there are nine gemstones connected to the Navagraha (celestial forces including the planets, the sun, and the moon), known in Sanskrit as Navaratna (nine gems). At birth, an astrological chart is calculated, and certain stones are recommended to be worn to ward off potential problems based on the celestial forces’ position in the sky at the exact place and time of birth.
A Colorful Legacy
The history of birthstones is a kaleidoscope of cultures, beliefs, and customs, weaving a vibrant tapestry that stretches across time and geography. As you wear your own birthstone, remember the rich legacy you carry with you – a colorful story that spans millennia, connecting you to the mysteries of the past and the promises of the future.
